Ela

The word Ela means Mother Earth in Sanskrit, and is the label name of an organic and sustainable fashion label produced, designed and developed in New Delhi, India. The collection, designed by Joyjit Talukdar, was launched by the Creative Group at New Delhi Fashion Week, and features organic un-dyed and unbleached cotton, in combination with milk and bamboo jersey.  Creating a flowing, understated but quirky collection, Ela have substituted drawstrings and other traditional Indian fastenings in an effort to eliminate zippers and any  plastic fastenings or findings.  Motivated and inspired by the influence of green fashion trends around the world and a vision for future generations, Talukdar believes that the future of fashion lies in sustainable production.  Ela aims to produce a collection with integrity, while balancing preservation of the environment and social welfare.  Currently in the process of procuring organic certification, Ela don’t use any chemicals in production, and minimize packaging and waste.

Bridging the gap between East and West in his creations, Talukdar brings his homeland in Shillong, Meghalaya, India, together with Western cultural characteristics and the tribal identity of the Brahmaputra valley.  Believing that clothing is an extension of our emotional and physical being, and that dress conveys a powerful message of who we are and what we represent, Ela’s organic journey, like all journeys has been both internal and external, emotional and physical. Producing a collection that allows their customers to show the world what they stand for, by making an organic clothing line that lets the body breathe, in combination with elegance of design, Ela aims to express balance.

Inspired by life, experiences, and interactions with others and the environment, Talukdar is moved by classical as well as freestyle dance, along with a passion for exploring and understanding through a multitude of mediums including film, art, music, photography and theatre.  A graduate of NIFT, with eight years of experience in the industry under his belt, Talukdar‘s passion for incorporating a lasting integrity through design is now fashioned into this eco friendly clothing line.
