RiceFieldCollective15

Ricefield Collective is an ethical fashion start-up based in Ithaca, New York and Ifugao, in the Philippines. Producing hand knitted accessories with locally sourced natural fibers, they feature innovative designs inspired by the landscape of Ifugao. Knitted by the indigenous women from the mountains of the Philippines, Ricefield Collective help empower their knitters and sustain their way of life on the Banaue Rice Terraces. Employing their knitters directly, Ricefield Collective ensure they receive a sustainable wage, earning one and a half to two times more than the day rate for farm labor in the area. The Ifugao Rice Terraces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, carved out of the Philippine mountains thousands of years ago.

RiceFieldCollective14Their hand knits are distinctly hand crafted, impossible to replicate through mechanized means. The collection symbolizes the intertwining of lives of those that conceive and make, the collection, with those that admire and wear it. Ricefield Collective’s goal is to bring high-quality, creatively designed hand knits to mainstream fashion, at fair prices. Featuring their knitters as models on their website, Ricefield were funded through Kickstarter, raising 300% more than their intended fundraising goal. Melding tradition with innovation, they use indigenous craft as the catalyst for new design.
