Vermilio

Vermilio1

Vermilio is a soulful kids clothing collection with a story. Produced from hand woven, unbleached and naturally dyed cotton, the collection helps preserve ancient textile traditions in Burma and Thailand. With no chemical dyes, and no water pollution through manufacture, the clothing is also toxic free. The collection is seasonless, and intended to be worn year round. Full of pockets, it is practical, playful and quite simply adorable. Designed with children in mind, pockets are large enough to hold a world full of treasure, including sticks, stones, chestnuts and toys. The intention is to marry traditional techniques with thoughtful design.

The socially conscious business model empowers women, by offering them meaningful work with fair pay, in a healthy environment. Vermilio helps protect and preserve the rich textile tradition of natural dying and hand weaving. They also plant organic natural dye gardens to provide color for future collections. Supporting the planting of more organically grown local cotton for certification, Vermilio plant three trees for every $100 spent on shipping, as a means of offsetting carbon emissions. They also use recycled paper hang tags and packaging, along with biodegradable inks for printing.

Sandra and Sylvia, the founders, met on the Thai, Burma border, immediately deciding to collaborate on a childrenswear collection. With the shared goals of preserving traditional weaving and dying techniques, as well as spreading organic cotton cultivation, the Vermilio – Chimmuwa collaboration was born. Named Vermilio after the tiny insect used as a natural red dye since Neolithic times.
