Patagonia – Truth to Materials

Patagonia2Truth to Materials is Patagonia’s exploration into glorifying the origin of individual materials, by staying as true as possible to them, through every step of the design and manufacturing process; allowing the materials to “shine in their own light”. Honoring the purest form of each of the materials, Patagonia’s aim is to intervene as minimally as possible, whether that is through limited processing of cashmere and wool or reusing cutting room scraps of organic cotton, that would otherwise end up in landfill.

Patagonia3The clothes in the Truth to Materials collection represent a deep dive into Patagonia’s progress with their existing textile range, by building on their existing assortment of materials such as recycled polyester and organic cotton, by utilizing fewer virgin resources, focusing more on craftsmanship and intervening less through dying and processing. Dubbed “responsible manufacturing”, this represents simply another step in Patagonia’s ongoing desire to be better and to do more.

Patagonia4The collection ranges from pullovers and cardigans, to crew’s and hoodies, and includes parka’s jackets and a reclaimed down scarf. Materials range from natural undyed Mongolian cashmere, reclaimed cotton; salvaged from factory cutting waste, shredded and respun with virgin organic cotton, reclaimed wool; from a mixture of discarded garments and factory waste, and, reclaimed down; in a partnership with Natalie Chanin of Alabama Chanin, who takes Patagonia’s damaged and beyond repair down jackets, and fashions a quilted, patchwork scarf from the remnants.
