Fabric of Change
Fabric of Change calls for innovations for building a fair and sustainable apparel industry.
Taunina produce teddy bears; beautiful, embroidered, precious teddy bears, festooned with colorful hand-stitched appliques and intricately embroidered butterflies, birds, flowers, kites, and balloons.
Each bear takes about a week to complete, that includes hand-cutting the pattern to the final stuffing and stitching. Every bear has a different story, and is stamped with the artisan’s initials.
Packaged in their own custom-made hatbox, the bears come with a certified passport, which bears the name and photograph of the artisan who created it.
Cape Town based Taunina is a social consciousness undertaking that provides a steady income for women with no assets and no income.
Paying women a wage as opposed to a piece-rate for work done, Taunina pay the women above the market rate.
Launched in 2011 by South African Tracey Chiappini-Young and Brazilian-American Karen Jansen, Taunina was born from late night discussions during their studies at the London School of Economics.
Their artisan aid initiative employs women from poor communities, allowing them to earn a living through traditional embroidery skills.
