Spanish wearable artist Remedios Vincent creates a collection of upcycled designs sourced from antique shops and flea markets. Working with items often more than a century old, Remedios’s interest is in giving new life to items that are no longer useful. Items retain an intrigue from days gone by, many with a sort of macabre, Gothic appeal. Items reimagined in an entirely different context. Remedios’s aspiration is not to embellish through her art, but instead to impart nostalgic dosages of memories, and dreams, as well as nightmares, paranoia, discomfort and doubt. Not intended as pieces of jewelry to beautify through use, but instead small objects of art, with a macabre appeal. Fragile relics from another time, now with an entirely different use.

Objects carry their own stories, subtly retained through design intervention. Alternatively beautiful without much design manipulation, other more functional items acquire an unsuspected interest through aesthetic use. The items used, originally crafted as objects of beauty and practicality, are from metal, brass, glass and polished wood, many surgical tools or various other trades. Each piece is individually hand crafted, making designs unique and entirely unrepeatable. Vincent scours estate sales and second hand shops for intriguing items, with vintage items such as forceps, gauges, measuring spoons, knives and fishing tackle, of particular interest, each modified to be worn as an accessory.

Each object has its own story, used by people from other parts of the world, at other times; Vincent retains their spirit while subtlety intervening. His aspiration is not to embellish, but to dress up without pretention, challenging the viewer to reconsider value, aesthetic and decoration through his work, by honoring the history and aesthetics of good craftsmanship.
