Shanghai Tang EcoChic Collection

The Shanghai Tang x EcoChic Capsule Collection is the first limited edition, up-cycled collection from the winner of The EcoChic Design Award 2014, 2015 cycle – Kévin Germanier. The capsule collection retains the elegance and tradition of the brand, while adding an edgy, graphic and contemporary feel.

Germanier took inspiration from Shanghai Tang’s archive to design seven pieces with his vision of ‘modern Chinese chic’. Using up-cycled surplus luxury fabric from previous Shanghai Tang collections, Germanier composed a patchwork sharply contrasted by a sleek modern interpretation of the qipao dress. The colour palette is linked to the brand’s main collections, to enable customers to mix and match pieces from both collections.

The EcoChic Design Award is a sustainable fashion design competition coordinated by Redress Asia, inspiring emerging fashion designers to create fashionable clothing from textile waste. The initiative educates designers about the fashion industry’s environmental impacts through sustainable fashion design techniques, including zero-waste, up-cycling and reconstruction. It provides designers with the tools to develop their understanding of sustainable fashion, and challenges them to utilize textile was as a resource to enable transition towards sustainable design.

Designs were produced in limited edition quantities, and can be purchased online and a select few stores around the world. Ten per cent of sales from the Shanghai Tang collection will be donated to Redress to support them in promoting sustainability in the fashion industry.
