Comptoir des Cotonniers and Mercado Global

Artisan crafted Mercado Global and Comptoir des Cotonniers, produce a chic, ethical capsule collection made in Guatemala. The iconic accessories meld contemporary Parisian design, with a touch of Mayan history and artistry, making a very individual link to the past.

The collection consists of two purses, two pouches and two bracelets, all hand-made from pure cotton, with natural leather straps and handles. Traditional Mayan handloom patterns are reinterpreted into a large globe-trotter purse, a zippered clutch and small pouch in graphic black and white. Contrasting leather handles and two-tone tassels accessories each of the pieces. A blue and white tie dyed stripe decorates the large tote bag, and the collection is rounded out by two woven and beaded cuffs in blue and black. The entire capsule collection is hand crafted by women in Guatemala. Comptoir des Cotonniers crossed the Atlantic to work with communities of women weavers, who used their craftsmanship to make Comptoir’s summer accessories.

The Mercado Global charity employs over three hundred craftswomen in thirty cooperatives throughout the Western mountains of Guatemala. Supporting them to break out of poverty by bringing their crafts to international markets. Mercado also provide the women with business coaching, bringing them greater confidence through their work, and enabling them to earn enough for themselves and their families.

The Comptoir des Cotonniers and Mercado Global collaboration benefited one hundred and twenty one craftswomen in twenty-one communities, who worked for over twenty thousand hours to create these unique items.
