Celine Cannon
Celine Cannon is an artist working primarily in stone and fiber. Her weaving is raw, refined, and deeply textural, wraps and throws incorporate a wide variety of yarn gauges from super fine, delicate, airy and even gauzy, to oversized wooly inserts of raw fleece. Giant loops and slubs create bands of texture, where tension and gauge are as fluid as the ocean. Monochromatic color palettes, based around ivory, steel grey and black, with the occasional peek-a-boo contrasted inserts, keep the focus on the depth of texture expressed in every piece.
Originally from Ireland, Cannon apprenticed at the family Quarry in Dublin, where she learned ancient techniques passed down through the generations. Now is based in New York, her work can be found in the homes of Donna Karan, Sting and Trudie Styler, Meg Ryan and Steven Spielberg, to name just a few. As a commercial artist, her contracts have included architectural moldings and details for several building facades throughout New York including Columbia University, Metropolitan Museum, the Jewish Museum and the New York Public Library.
