Ursula Suter

Switzerland’s Ursula Suter makes highly dimensional felted items including clothing, accessories and jewelry. Her technique is closely related a form of stitched-resist, beginning with sheets of wool batting, she gently pleats, tucks and ruches a series of parallel folds with the aid of a needle and thread.  Each fold and tuck is covered with thin plastic and lightly stitched in place, prior to the felting process, with the plastic shielding the selected areas from felting to each other, instead creating fins and fluting.  When complete, the ridges stand away from the surface in a variety of ways.
