Swati Kalsi

Swati Kalsi is both a textile and a fashion designer, working with hand crafted textiles. Bringing contemporary design to artisan made, hand crafted textiles, Kalsi pushes for the sustainability of time honored craftsmanship. Having engaged artisans in various capacities for over ten years, her more recent independent work, incorporates an interactive creative process that crosses the boundaries between design, craft and art, to produce distinct and original work. The understated elegance of her creations are a result of the unforeseen and unexpected, that highlight the quirks and anomalies that occur through the process of creation.

Designs have a timeless aesthetic that honor tradition and craftsmanship. Simple lines and architectural shapes emphasize the surface detailing and amazing workmanship. With a belief in the innate knowledge of the hand the partnerships bring to life surfaces and designs that could never be mimicked by a machine. Working to match skill with tradition and an aesthetic spirit, she produces transcendent workmanship.

Born in New Delhi, Kalsi graduated from NIFT with several awards, including ‘Best Use of Textiles in Fashion’, as well as winning a scholarship for Domus Academy in Italy. She was given the opportunity to work closely with skilled artisans as part of the Jiyol’ World Bank Programme, and as a means of positioning traditional Indian women’s embroidery, as innovative, and a unique cultural legacy of India.
