Commentary & Critique - Make do and Mend
Make Do and Mend is an idea born of necessity, something people have done around the world for as long as they have struggled to survive, or prioritized needs above consumption.
RIYKA produce a womenswear collection made entirely from upcycled, leftover and organic materials. The brand creates fun, playful pieces from the highest quality British made materials, and GOTS certified organic cotton. Using vibrant, contrasting colors and geometric patterns, designs are inspired by the everyday. Their retro 70’s aesthetic, features tent dresses, athletic inspired casual wear, slouchy jumpers, boyfriend shirts, leggings and oversized dresses. Easy wear fabrics take center stage, with denim, linen, cotton, jersey and velour heavily featured. Simple clean lines and silhouettes feature boxy, square and flared shapes with bold graphic color blocking, and stripes featured throughout.
Founders Rebecca Johnson and Vedran Kulic proudly produce quality, sustainable and timeless clothing they believe in, love, and stand by. The collection is designed in the UK, and fairly and sustainably produced in their Bulgarian atelier. The brand epitomize the concept of slow fashion, with limited edition designs, and zero waste practices, utilizing every scrap of fabric with their pieced and patched aesthetic.
